ABSTRACT BACKGROUND: Effective triage and early detection are very important for controlling and treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Thus, the relationships between hypoalbuminemia and other acute-phase reactants in such cases need to be evaluated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the importance of albumin levels in cases of severe pneumonia due to COVID-19. DESIGN AND SETTING: Prospective study conducted in Ankara City Hospital (a stage 3 hospital), Turkey. METHODS: Data from 122 patients diagnosed with pneumonia due to COVID-19 who were admitted to this hospital were analyzed statistically in comparison with date from 60 healthy controls. Three groups were established: healthy controls, intubated patients and non-intubated patients. Lung tomography scans from the patients were examined one-by-one. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test results were recorded. RESULTS: Albumin levels were statistically significantly lower in the intubated and non-intubated groups than in the control group, in comparing the three groups (P < 0.01). The other acute-phase reactants, i.e. neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and C-reactive protein levels, were significantly higher in the intubated and non-intubated groups than in the control group (P < 0.05). Albumin levels were also significantly lower in the intubated group than in the non-intubated group (P = 0.02). No differences were detected with regard to other parameters (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Hypoalbuminemia may constitute a biomarker indicating the severity of pneumonia due to COVID-19.

Medical biochemistry is a very important basic curricular in medicine teaching.But its theory is abstract,so it is difficult for teachers to teach.On the other hand,the students feel it hard to learn too,because they don't know how these theories are applied.We have applied case-based teaching in medical biochemistry teaching.These methods effectively improve students' enthusiasm to study and to train their scientific thinking in preliminary.Following this way we have explored a new way to elevate teaching qualities and search new teaching model and to further reform present medical biochemistry teaching model.
ABSTRACT
We analyze the characteristics of foreign students and the problems in biochemistry teaching process by summarizing the practice of medical biochemistry teaching for undergraduate foreign students in Wenzhou Medical College. After careful thought on these problems,we brought forward some ideas and methods which may be useful to reform the teaching mode and improve the teaching results of medical biochemistry for foreign students.

Considering the character of biochemistry,this paper discussed teaching method and accounted for the importance of experiment teaching in biochemistry by some demonstrations including analyzing carefully for catching common ground;integrating theory with practice for helping understand and memorize;agitating the students' study interest etc.In addition,the importance of students was not to be ignored in teaching process.

To meet the requirement of cultivating talented people,the following problems were explored in the medical biochemistry experiments classes including teaching content,teaching format,teaching management,and evaluation of the teaching performance and strengthening of students' capacity cultivation.

In the process of teaching southern Asia students in medical biochemistry,teaching mode has been actively explored.Sufficient preparation before class,applying nimble teaching style,emphasis on communication with foreign students and searching for effective review and examination system will receive the satisfactory results.
